Meditation Technique

I overheard this conversation while eating lunch the other day. It reminded me of a meditation we can use, but we do not always realize that it is a meditation technique.

(Person One) - "But if you take away my faith in all these things....my faith in religion, my faith in society, my faith in justice, my faith in parents, sisters, brothers, teachers, friends....what do I have left...other than my faith in me."

(Person Two) - "Wonderful, now go to that place within you that is YOU. Enjoy!"

This conversation reminded me of an ancient Sanskirt blessing known as Namaste.
The term Namaste is commonly used within new-age, yoga and reiki circles. It is a respectful greeting, both as a welcome and a saying good-bye. This Sanskrit word was brought to the western world by spiritual seekers in India and Nepal. This salutation addresses the inner man, where western greetings focus on attention for the outer person.

The gesture Namaste represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another. While meeting the other one on the level of the heart and soul, the separation between two crumbles into pieces; no longer is there another one – there is only One.

Namaste! "Nama" means bow, "as" means I, and "te" means you. Therefore, Namaste literally means "bow me you" or "I bow to you." To perform Namaste, we place the hands together at the heart charka, close the eyes, and bow the head. It can also be done by placing the hands together in front of the third eye, bowing the head, and then bringing the hands down to the heart. This is an especially deep form of respect. Although in the West the word "Namaste" is usually spoken in conjunction with the gesture, in India, it is understood that the gesture itself signifies Namaste, and therefore, it is unnecessary to say the word while bowing. Thus it is both a spoken greeting and a gesture, a Mantr(a) and a Mudr(a). The prayerful hand position is a Mudr(a) called Anjali, from the root Anj, "to adorn, honor, celebrate or anoint." The hands held in union signify the oneness of an apparently dual cosmos, the bringing together of spirit and matter, or the self meeting the Self. We bring the hands together at the heart chakra to increase the flow of Divine love. Bowing the head and closing the eyes helps the mind surrender to the Divine in the heart.

One can do Namaste to oneself as a meditation technique to go deeper inside the heart chakra; when done with someone else, it is also a beautiful, albeit quick, meditation. Namaste allows two individuals to come together energetically to a place of connection and timelessness, free from the bonds of ego-connection. If it is done with deep feeling in the heart and with the mind surrendered, a deep union of spirits can blossom... thereby allowing the truth to flow—the truth that we are all one when we live from the heart.

Here are two versions of the English interpretation of the word Namaste

Namaste

“I honor the place in you in which the entire universe dwells.
I honor the place in you which is
of Love, of Truth, of Light, and of Peace.
When you are in that place in you
and I am in that place in me, We are One."
Namaste

"I honor the place in you where Spirit lives
I honor the place in you which is
of Love, of Truth, of Light, of Peace,
when you are in that place in you,
and I am in that place in me,
then we are One."
